Alcohol/Drug Diversion Program

Coordinator/Teacher of the Antelope Valley Union High School District's (AVUHSD) Alcohol/Drug Diversion program for 1st time offenders.  This educational program is mandatory as an alternative to alternative school placement for all 1st time alcohol/drug offenders.

Conflict Resolution

Conflict Resolution is a very successful preventive program that alleviates many difficulties before they become physical. This process allows students to use communication skills and confront issues that are causing the students problems on campus.  Any student may take advantage of this process by coming to the Guidance Office and asking for conflict resolution. A counselor acts as a mediator and helps the students come to a non-violent agreement.

New Student Transition

A new student orientation is offered monthly to introduce newly enrolled students to Quartz Hill High School.

Peer Mediation

The Peer Mediation program will be reinstated for second semester.  Students trained in Conflict Management are available EVERY PERIOD to act as Peer Mediators in the guidance office.  These students are overseen by the counselors and have been trained in conflict resolution skills.  If you know that your student is having a problem with another student, you can refer them to these mediators by contacting the guidance department and speaking (or emailing) Shannon, conflict resolution coordinator.  Or, you can encourage your student to come the guidance office and have a mediation scheduled with the Peer Mediators.

Personal/Social Groups

A presentation is made to all of the QHHS student body during homeroom explaining the various groups that can be offered to the students.  The group topics range from Anger Management to Test Taking Anxiety.  After the information is gathered from the student body as to what groups they would be interested in participating in, permission slips are sent out to the student. Once the permission slips are turned back into the Guidance office, the students are given passes on a weekly basis to attend the groups.  All of the students who participate in these groups are excused from their classes but still must make up any missing work and the scheduled meetings are rotated throughout the day over a 6 to 8 week period so the student's participation in a personal/social group does not impact their grades negatively.

Power of Choice

This four-week intervention program specifically reaches students who have gone through a referral process, and after three other preventions, continue to manifest anger problems at school.  It is our belief that as counselors, we can provide a safe, accepting environment, where students can explore their past anger pattern.  They can acknowledge the negative effect their anger has had on their lives, their friends and family.  The group experience will also help students to look at the outcome of their anger on their academic and personal growth.  Students learn techniques to assist them in regaining positive control, rather than succumbing to outbursts of emotional responses.
