The Career Center is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Students can utilize the Career Center before & after school, during snack & lunch, and during class with a pass from their teacher. The Career Center is closed 5th period. Teachers may call ext. 183 to schedule class time in the Career Center. There are seven computers in the Career Center that are available to use as a research tool. All computers have Internet capability. The student will need to have an "Internet Agreement" on file and have their ID stamped before using the Internet. The Career Center is one of our student's greatest resources to research colleges, universities, trade/technical schools, and future career opportunities. As always, students may sign up to attend College presentations at snack, lunch or after school. Mrs. Hopper emails and distributes to faculty and staff hard copies of monthly calendars that list presentations and also scholarship opportunities. The calendars are also posted in the Career Center, the Guidance Office, in the Guidance folder on Edline and links to the current calendars are both on the QHHS Website and listed below.
Students can utilize the Career Center to get the latest information on...
BridgeThe "Bridge", a Career Development Plan, was instituted in the AVUHSD in 1998. This was brought about as a result of the School-to-Work Opportunities Act of 1994. The program covers lessons for students in grades 9 - 12 which discuss such school to career issues as: work ethics, career information, and post-secondary information. The dissemination of such lessons to appropriate subject area teachers to share with their students has taken place over the past couple of years. All counselors are involved in covering the same material to a lesser degree with 9th grade students during their Healthful Living class when their 4-year plan is planned. Post-secondary options available to students after high school are extensive. Students are encouraged to pursue job skills or training in preparation to enter a career field. Presentations at all grade levels discuss the many varied options available to our youth. Some of these include: Regional Occupational Programs (ROP) which offer job skills for students age 16 - adult. For more information contact our local ROP office at 661-575-1000 or online.
Apprenticeships offer hands-on training along with classroom education. Students can earn wages while learning on the job. For more information, contact the Los Angeles Regional Office for the California Division of Apprenticeship Standards at 213-576-7750. Community Colleges offer certificate programs. Antelope Valley Community College (AVCC) offers numerous such programs which are short term (6 months - 2 years) and offer job skills. Additionally, they offer students an opportunity to earn an AA or AS and transfer to a 4-year university. Contact the Guidance Office at AVC at 661-722-6300 or try online.
Individual trade and technical schools are another option. By visiting our Career Center, students can obtain information and resources to help narrow down the search. The Military offers numerous opportunities for high school graduates. Links include:
